USSSA Mixed World Series

Viera, FL- October 12, 2017- The Mixed World Series slowpitch tournament is quickly approaching. It will be held October 13-15th at Disney’s Wide World of Sports and will host a total of 132 teams between the A, B, C, D, and E divisions with a champion rising out of each level. Coed slowpitch is unique because it allows men and women the opportunity to play alongside each other and it also challenges players with a different rule structure than the traditional slowpitch game.

The open division of the Mixed World Series brings together some of the top men and women slowpitch players in the game including the Derby Boys/Derby Girls which is made up of male players from the Men’s Major Championship team Smash It and Women’s Major Championship team Derby Girls. Andy Purcell of Smash It stated “the Derby Girls are powerful hitters and can play great defense. The girls being really talented and competitive allows our team to do well and go far.” Smash It and Walnutz player Ryan Harvey added “I love seeing the women compete with the men and how they’re able to hang with us, show the softball world how truly good they are, and how competitive their conference is.”

Slowpitch teams that competed alongside each other all summer long split up and play separately for the Mixed World Series Tournaments competing against each other in a little friendly competition. For example, the Walnutz are made up of Men’s Major players from Smash It, Resmondo, and Newbreed while the female Walnutz players hail from the Derby Girls, Lady Primetime, and Incognito. The tournament is seen to be a lot of fun for everyone to compete and take bragging rights until the following season starts back up. “It’s always tough playing against your teammates that you’ve battled with all year, but when it comes down to it, when the game starts, that’ll all go away and it’s another game we must win!” Ryan Harvey stated about playing against his Smash It teammates.

Additionally, the Mixed World series is different than normal slowpitch events because different rules apply to the game. Men will hit 12” balls and women will hit 11” balls, meaning the pitcher will alternate the balls they’re throwing every batter. The different sizes of the ball can sometimes lead to errant throws by the fielders who don’t necessarily touch the ball every play. The homerun count is limited to eight for the men and is unlimited for the women during games. Other rules include that the lineup must alternate man-woman and teams can decide whether they want to have 12 hitters in the lineup or stick to the typical 10.

It is no surprise that this weekend will be full of great players, lots of laughs, good competition, and impressive softball. It will have been a fun end to a fantastic slowpitch season. We will see who will be taking home bragging rights for the rest of the year on Sunday. Stay tuned.
